A COVID-19 Call to Arms for Gift Planners

Posted by on May 05, 2020 01:31:08 PM

As estate planning surges in the US and donors require high-touch support to navigate this unique moment, savvy nonprofits are doubling down on gift planning in 2020.

Right now, gift planners are combining their dual abilities to nurture deep personal relationships and explain more complicated giving vehicles to help steer nonprofit organizations through the current storm. We’d like to remind you of a few facts about planned gifts that challenge the “cash is king” mentality that nonprofit leaders often fall back to during economic downturns.

The National Association of Charitable Gift Planners (CGP) is proud to announce Alan Alda as the 2020 opening dinner keynote speaker sponsored by TIAA Kaspick.

Alan Alda, actor, writer, director and communication enthusiast will be joined by Dr. Laura Lindenfeld, Executive Director of the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science to discuss the magic of clear and vivid communication. Alan and Laura will take questions from the audience after they discuss the role of empathy, improvisation, and message design in effective communication.

ABOUT ALAN ALDA

Alan Alda, 7-time Emmy Award–winner, played Hawkeye Pierce and wrote many of the episodes on the classic TV series M*A*S*H, the final episode of which was seen by more than 105 million people, still a record audience. Alan has starred in, written and directed many films, and was nominated for an Academy Award for his role in The Aviator. He has appeared in continuing roles on ER, The West Wing, 30 Rock, The Blacklist, Horace and Pete, CBS’s new streaming series The Good Fight, and a recurring role on Showtime’s Ray Donovan. Alan is the recent recipient of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Lifetime Achievement Award and he is currently starring in the new Noah Baumbach film, Marriage Story, with Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson.

His skills as an interviewer were honed for 11 years on the award-winning PBS series Scientific American Frontiers where he interviewed hundreds of the world’s greatest scientists. Using his experience as an actor in relating to the people he interviews, he has brought out their humanity and humor, while lending clarity to sometimes complex ideas.

This became the basis of the work of the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science®, which has trained over 15,000 doctors and scientists to be world-class communicators. Alan is the author of several New York Times Best Selling books, the most recent being the 2017 break out book on relating and communicating, If I Understood You, Would I Have This Look on My Face? The book, which has also been number one on Amazon’s top seller list for business and communication, explores the importance of relating in every line of work, and in every aspect of our lives.

Alan is also the founder and CEO of Alda Communication Training (ACT)®, which supports the Alda Center by helping to provide global workshops for STEM and business professionals seeking to better their communication and leadership skills.

Alan ’s new podcast, “Clear+Vivid with Alan Alda®” launched in July 2018 and now has more than 6 million downloads. The podcast is available on Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, Spotify, iHeartRadio, GooglePlay, and on his official web site: AlanAlda.com

Universal Giving Pandemic Response Act

June 25, 2020

On June 21,  Sens. Lankford (R-OK), Coons (D-DE), Lee (R-UT), Shaheen (D-NH), Scott (R-SC), and Klobuchar (D-MN) introduced the Universal Giving Pandemic Response Act, which would expand the current above-the-line deduction made available by the CARES Act.  Specifically, the bill would make available – for tax years 2019 and 2020 – an above-the-line deduction for charitable giving on federal income taxes valued at up to one-third of the standard deduction.  This would significantly increase the allowable charitable deduction for taxpayers who do not itemize and potentially generate billions of new giving for the charitable sector.

Read the Bill

On June 2nd, five United States Senators participated in a national town hall meeting called “ From Common Ground to Congressional Action: Advancing the Universal Charitable Deduction“ with members of the nonprofit sector.
