Implementing a Legacy Challenge Match Program at a Major, Multifaceted Institution

Presenter: John Kendrick and Courtney Tsai

You don’t need to work at an organization as complex as George Washington University to learn from its legacy challenge match. John Kendrick and Courtney Tsai help you answer the questions every challenge has in common. How can you secure the matching funds? How big of a matching pool do you need to launch a meaningful program? How can you convince your organization’s major gift officers and leadership buy in?

What you'll learn:
•    How to plan the program, from the initial pitch to managers to the final celebration and beyond.
•    How to set rules, including which gifts count and how to document them.
•    How to involve major gift officers, the board, and others whose participation is critical to success.

John Kendrick joined the George Washington University in April, 2008. He leads a team of eight planned giving professionals who serve all areas of the University. Under John’s leadership, GW has expanded the university’s emphasis on gift planning and instituted a full-service real estate philanthropy program, with more than $170 million of new and realized planned gifts documented during the current Making History comprehensive campaign for GW. Previously, Mr. Kendrick was the Director of Planned Giving for the Smithsonian Institution and he held development positions at the National Academy of Sciences and Hood College. His development work follows an 18-year career in advertising, publishing, and marketing.
