Have you found yourself new to the world of estate and gift planning? Maybe you have been working in or around the profession for several years and are ready to explore further. No two paths into our field are the same, and the journey often takes us down varying and exciting new roads. No matter where you are in your estate and gift planning career, evaluating how you got here and where you want to go next is a valuable practice.

In this session, we’ll hear from three seasoned professionals who followed different paths in the practice of estate and gift planning. We’ll learn from their biggest hurdles, celebrate their biggest wins, and ask their opinions on what it takes to continue in this varying and exciting career. We’ll end the session with a Q&A, so come prepared to ask for advice and share your thoughts with others.

This program will feature content for young professionals in gift planning, but all are welcome to attend this free event.

Carlo Laurore

Carlo Laurore is a current Board member of the National Association of Charitable Gift Planners and a current board member of his local North Carolina Planned Giving Council Board.  For work, Carlo leads the national planned giving efforts for Boy Scouts of America, where he has worked for the past seven years. In addition to grant management, endowment growth initiatives and charitable gift planning, his team also supports funding strategy for DEI efforts, corporate partnerships, and Private Foundations. Previously, Carlo worked in higher education fundraising at NC State University and NC A&T University.  Notably, he is responsible for starting the gift planning program at NC A&T, where he helped close the largest gift from a non-alum individual at that time.  Afterward, at NC State he led a complete revamp and expansion of their gift planning marketing efforts.  The outcome a 150% increase in closed gifts from marketing-related leads. Prior to his work in fundraising, Carlo worked for 8 years in the financial services industry for BB&T, where he held the title of Vice President and managed a $50+ million-dollar portfolio of business loan clients. He holds numerous financial planning and fundraising designations, including his CFP®, CFRE, and CAP®. Most importantly, he has a heart for philanthropy, youth development, and helping non-profit organizations big and small maximize their fundraising efforts through soliciting gifts of non-cash assets and optimizing their gift planning program.  He has been featured speaker at various local CGP Councils and will be a speaker at the upcoming 2022 National CGP Conference in Reno.

Lisa M. Chmiola

Lisa M. Chmiola, M.S., CFRE, has more than 20 years in philanthropic development. She has served in major gifts and gift planning roles in education (public and private) and religious institutions, following initial career experience in event-based philanthropy. As Chief Fablanthropist for Fablanthropy (the intersection of fabulous and philanthropy), she works with nonprofit organizations and fundraising professionals providing consulting, training, and coaching services, particularly on legacy giving strategies.An AFP Master Trainer since 2014, Lisa has presented at four AFP International Conferences and a variety of AFP and other industry association regional conferences, chapter meetings, and webinars. She serves as an adjunct instructor in Communication at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and in Rice Universitys Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership. Lisa is an active volunteer, serving on the U.S. Government Relations committee and the Emerging Leaders Task Force for AFP Global, as a board member of the National Association of Charitable Gift Planners (and past president of the Houston chapter), as a committee chair for the AFP Baton Rouge Chapter, as a Junior League of Lafayette sustainer, and is a graduate of Leadership Houston. Additionally, she has co-authored several pieces for AFP’s Advancing Philanthropy magazine.

Maria Tipton

Maria Tipton is a wealth advisor at Stock Yards Bank & Trust. As a wealth advisor, building long-term relationships and working closely with clients to define and achieve their goals are what Maria looks forward to most every day. She is proud to work at a local institution that is committed to the community and puts clients’ best interests first. After receiving her Bachelor of Arts degree magna cum laude from the University of Louisville, Maria went on to earn her Juris Doctor magna cum laude from the Louis D. Brandeis School of Law at the University of Louisville. A Louisville native, Maria is an avid supporter of the local sports teams and is unfailingly loyal to her beloved Cardinals. When not at work or with her family and friends, she enjoys being active and exploring Louisville’s local food scene.
