Live Once, Plan Often-Fundraising Across Generations

 Anne Bucciarelli and Don Kent

The newest paradigm shift in financial planning is being driven by the emerging intergenerational wealth transfer, the largest in history. While the industry is abuzz with must-dos for fundraisers who want to connect with the next generation of donors, much of the latest research indicates that fundraisers can make a significant difference by focusing on just two areas: developing meaningful relationships with clients' heirs and engaging younger investors on their own terms. This program will equip fundraisers with strategies to engage the next generation in meaningful ways and provide resources to build relationships over time.  In this interactive workshop session, we will uncover the lens through which four generations of philanthropists see their world, and how it informs their giving. What has occurred in the lifetimes of Traditionalists, Baby Boomers, Generation X, and Generation Y/Millennials that has shaped and informed the behaviors and values of each of these generations? Understanding these differing worldviews, how does that shape the way you, as a fund-raiser, approach each cohort? After this session, fundraisers will understand the differing considerations, needs and wants for Traditionalists, Baby Boomers, Generation X, and Generation Y/Millennials and understand how to approach each generation on their own terms, and how best to facilitate next generation and multi-generational giving.

Learning Objectives:
1. Understand Traditionalists, Baby Boomers, Gen X and Millennials and how their worlds are different.
2. Share ideas and fundraising strategies that appeal to the different generations among the group.
3. Access how you, as a fundraiser, currently approach various generations and how that may change based on the learnings uncovered in this session
