Harness the Power of Blended Giving

Cindy Atmar and Christopher Kasavich

As fundraisers, our goal is to maximize our fundraising efforts and help donors make the most meaningful and best gifts to our institutions.  When a donor isn't comfortable with or can't make a large outright gift or multi-year pledge, a blended gift may be the answer.  A blended gift is both a current AND future gift.   In this session we will explore how the planned giving department at MD Anderson Cancer Center has worked with our major gift officers to increase their level of knowledge and comfort with the subject of planned gifts.  We will share words and phrases to listen for, ways to respond and when to bring in an expert.  Hear stories of successful blended "asks" and learn techniques you can take back to your own organization and implement immediately.  Harness the power of blended giving strategies.

Learning Objectives:
1. Explain the importance of incorporating blended gifts into an overall development plan.
2. Describe cues a donor may give that they are good candidates for a blended gift discussion.
3. Develop strategies to help your development office make the shift to focusing on blended gifts.
