Ethical Fundraising with Seniors

David Kremer

How do we know when to switch from seeking the next gift to simply maintaining a relationship of kindness and stewardship?  We all value the relationships we have with our donors.  We know our interactions must be based on honesty, trust and respect.  Still, as our donors age, they face changes in physical and mental abilities. Surely the experts on aging can tell us how to handle this, right?  Wrong.  Because taking the high road is so important to sustaining successful fundraising results, David Kremer spent more than a year working with senior living community residents, volunteers, experts on aging and other research sources to create something special: the first-in-the-nation set of standards of practice for ethical fundraising with seniors. The fundraising profession has strong national ethical guidelines, but no such standards exist which deal with issues that arise for us as we work with older adults and their families. Until now.  As baby boomers age, this issue will gain more attention.  And, you'll be ready for it!  You'll leave this fun session ready to demonstrate to your donors and their families that you always take the ethical high road.  You'll be able to either adopt the sample standards or revise them to create something of your own.  You'll have the tools you need to make the best decisions as you interact with elderly donors and prospects.

Learning Objectives:
1. Attendees will be able to adopt, or revise and create, a set of ethical standards of practice for fundraising with aging donors.
2. Attendees will understand the complexity of issues related to working with senior donors who face changes in physical and mental abilities and use that knowledge to adjust their own practices.
3. Attendees will form attitudes and opinions about dealing with senior donors which are based on research, facts and always doing the right thing for the donor.
