Title: How to Succeed in Selling and Gifting Your Business Without Really Crying!

Presenters: Carí Jackson Lewis

Date: August 30, 2022

Time: 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. EST

Business owners who are considering retiring and selling their businesses have three big issues to consider. First, they will often have a low basis in their business, and after 20, 30, or even 40 years of appreciation, capital gains taxes are enough to make any business owner cry! Second, business owners who have spent the majority of their working lives building wealth and supporting their extended families (research shows that this particularly applies to African-American, Latinx or Asian-American entrepreneurs) may be concerned about their retirement income and their capacity to continue caring for their loved ones after the business sale. Finally, with the prospect of retirement looming on the horizon, how can these motivated and charitable go-getters keep their “second act” exciting, fulfilling and purposeful? In this session, learn how charitable gift planners can dry their potential donors’ tax tears and help them select charitable vehicles that accomplish their financial, familial, social and charitable goals. By listening closely to business owners and working collaboratively with their other trusted advisors, charitable gift planners can facilitate the sale of the business, provide the seller with a stream of income and assist the seller in establishing a family legacy of philanthropy.
