Questions to Start Gift Planning Conversations

Presenter: Greg Sharkey
Date: August 29, 2018
Time: 1:00 to 2 p.m. EDT

Planned giving happens on the donor's schedule, not the fundraiser's. How do you know when the time is right? Long before you talk about gift vehicles and tax advantages, you need to learn about the donor's values and motivations, life transitions, past philanthropic experiences and assets that offer challenges and opportunities. In this program, Greg Sharkey, Senior Philanthropy Advisor at The Nature Conservancy, will share questions that help you have better conversations with donors about the things that really matter in a planned gift decision. Greg's stories show how these questions often lead to charitable gifts.

What you'll learn
- How to encourage donors to talk about themselves so that you can spend most of your time listening.
- How to lean in to difficult topics like widowhood and divorce, instead of avoiding them.
- How to start a conversation about assets without directly asking about them.

As Senior Philanthropy Advisor for The Nature Conservancy, Greg assists donors in considering and implementing charitable gift plans to achieve their philanthropic, financial, and estate planning goals. He helps them understand and/or effectively use charitable giving platforms like donor advised funds and private foundations, and facilitates family philanthropy meetings involving these platforms. He also engages TNC colleagues and teams throughout the country and the world to develop strategy for their top donors/prospects. Greg was formerly Director of Planned Giving at Denison University and he practiced law at the firm of Sweeney, Sheehan & Spencer. He is a past president of the Central Ohio Planned Giving Council and former chair of the CGP Board of Directors. Greg has a degree in political science from Denison University and a JD from Villanova University School of Law.
